Manganite: manganese ore. Lower Carboniferous. Markhamville, New Brunswick (?). New Brunswick Museum (NBMM 1421). Image width (left) 12 cm. In the 1860s George Matthew found pyrolusite and manganite near Markhamville. The discovery led to a successful mining operation that was a significant manganese producer, exporting 55,000 tons of ore.
