Split Rock, Tynemouth

At Split Rock on Robinson Cove the bright red rocks of the Honeycomb Point Formation stand out against the brown to dark red Upper Carboniferous rocks. Abraham Gesner provided a sketch of Split Rock in his 1841 geology report for the Province. The same red rocks are admired in the village of St. Martins where tourists flock to the shallow sea caves eroded into the outcrop. The striking rock formation still inspires photographers and artists.
