Annidale
Near Annidale in southern New Brunswick rocks of Late Cambrian to Ordovician age, about 490 million years old, have been explored for gold that lies along the contact between the Avalon Terrane and the Gander and Dunnage terranes to the north. These rocks represent sediments of the Iapetus Ocean seafloor and island-arc volcanic rocks. Like the Avalon Terrane they were welded to ancient North America when the Iapetus Ocean closed. The boundary between the Gander/Dunnage and Avalon zones is now represented by a hidden suture, along which gold is commonly associated. The gold is along quartz veins associated with pyrite and chalcopyrite. Gold deposits of this type are referred to as ‘orogenic gold’ since their formation is related to tectonic features and the subduction-related process of mountain building.
