Woodstock
The Cobbler Sexton copper mine and the Dominion No. 1 lead –zinc prospect, were found by Edward Greer and John McClement in 1905-6. Quartz veins with chalcopyrite and pyrite occur in the Early Devonian age Gibson Granodiorite and in Cambrian to Ordovician quartzite. In 1907 interest in developing a copper mine took hold and a group of Woodstock citizens formed the Cobbler Sexton Mining Company Limited. Several years of activity resulted in not much more than a shaft being dug. Although mine manager James Hovey pushed the mine’s potential to investors, the promised ore was never found in quantities to support the efforts. Rumors that Robert Ells from the Geological Survey of Canada reported visible gold near a mine entrance fueled Hovey’s insistence that the mine was profitable.
