Boars Head, Saint John

In southern New Brunswick red Late Devonian rocks of the Kennebecasis Formation are a familiar sight.  At places like Boars Head in Saint John the striking headland has long greeted sailors as they pass out of ‘The Narrows’ after navigating the Reversing Rapids. The Kennebecasis Formation is comprised of sandstone and conglomerate (pebbles and boulders in sand) deposited in rivers that eroded the rising mountainous landscape of the Appalachians. Fossils have been rare in the Kennebecasis Formation, only a single fossil lobefin fish known as Holoptychius has been found alongside a small feeding burrow, trace fossil called Gyrophyllites, probably made by a wormlike animal.
