Pabineau Falls, Bathurst
On the Nepisiguit River south of Bathurst whitewater kayaks plunge over the weathered Pabineau Falls Granite. The Devonian Period witnessed the final closure of the Iapetus and Rheic Oceans. Subducted ocean crust melted and separated into heavier and lighter fractions. The lighter material rose upward and solidified near the surface as granite rocks. A radiometric age of 397 million years has been calculated for the Pabineau Falls Granite based on the decay of radioactive uranium into lead.
William Logan first described the Pabineau Falls Granite in 1863 in a Geological Survey of Canada Report. Logan was the Director of the ‘Survey’ and one of Canada’s most accomplished scientists.
