Passamaquoddy Bay Beaver
Fossil remains of Giant Beavers are known from across North America, from Alaska to Florida. Giant Beavers were indeed ‘giant’. Skeletal remains show that were about the size of a modern black bear, and weighed as much as 200 kilograms. Only a few fossils have been found in eastern Canada. A fossil found on an island in Passamaquoddy Bay in 1998 is the most eastern Canadian record of Giant Beaver. A single tooth, about the size of a banana, was identified as belonging to Castoroides ohioensis. Although its age has not been determined, Giant Beavers and mastodons were part of the same ice age fauna in other parts of North America. The fossil from New Brunswick is estimated to be about 80,000 years old.
