Mary’s Point Sandstone

Sandstone marketed as Mary’s Point Red and Mary’s Point Grey was well known in the Maritimes and New England in the 1800s. Many stone buildings from New York to Saint John were built from Boss Point Formation sandstone quarried at Mary’s Point. Little remains now of the once busy industry. A few building foundations can still be seen in the woods and on the shore the remnants of the quarries are still visible. Today Mary’s Point is best known as a bird sanctuary, a place where millions of shorebirds stop to feed on tiny mud shrimp from mid-July to mid-August. The Bay of Fundy provides a rich feeding ground for birds on their annual migration from the Arctic to South America.
