Trilobites are an extinct group of arthropods that once populated the sea floor environment in much the same way that crabs do today. Trilobites reached their peak in the Cambrian and Ordovician Periods and were in decline by the Silurian. Although they were extinct by the end of the Permian, they had 270 million year span on Earth.
