photograph: Cunningham Creek Formation, Cunningham Creek, New Brunswick, 2010. New Brunswick Museum. George Matthew discovered the first Silurian fish fossils in North America at this place in the mid 1880s. The fossil assemblage of fish and eurypterids including jawless fishes (heterostracans and anaspids), spiny-sharks (acanthodians), crustaceans, and the remains of giant sea scorpions (eurypterids) suggests this was a shallow ocean environment or lagoon.
