Born in Belledune in northern New Brunswick, Chalmers is recognized for his pioneering work on the glacial geology of New Brunswick. He was the first to systematically map the landforms and glacial deposits of Eastern Canada. He was a member of the Natural History Society of New Brunswick and later worked for the Geological Survey of Canada.
