Image width (left) 8 cm. Sawdonia belongs to a group of plants called zosterophylls (Zosterophyllophytes). They were among the first vascular plants in the fossil record. Although zosterophylls were orginally described as aquatic plants they are now belied to be land plants. By the Early Devonian they were turning the landscape green, although they were still mostly small.
