Chamcook, Red Sandstone
Most sandstone buildings in New Brunswick are constructed from stone cut from Upper Carboniferous quarries, carefully worked and shaped by stonecutters. St. John the Baptist Chapel of Ease, built in Chamcook in the 1840s, is different in both respects. First, the red sandstone is likely derived from the Devonian Perry Formation and possibly the Silurian Eastport Formation. Second, rather than carefully cutting stone, the main walls are constructed from local field and beach stones. The result is a striking building.
