Reg Wilson

Geologists at the Province’s Geological Surveys Branch map the rocks to create a picture of the geology, to understand why the rocks are where they are. Reg Wilson has been mapping northern New Brunswick in recent years, making his way through some of the most remote parts of the Province. Geological maps depict the surface exposure of the bedrock, delineating the contact of different rock formations, marking the position of faults, and illustrating the dipping angles of folded layers of rock. Wilson and his colleagues examine the rocks in the field, take measurement of the thickness of rock units, measure their ‘strike’ and ‘dip’, collect samples for radiometric dating, examine fossils for clues to the age, and look for signs of mineral wealth. Geological maps are the essential tools used to interpret the geological story.
